Management success in “Small Mammal Medicine”
(Case oriented approach)
In the 4 sessions of our online series, we will present a large number of clinical small mammal cases that will allow you to incorporate the experience and knowledge shared by ESAVS Principal Course Master Dr. Charly Pignon into your daily practice.
The entire series consists of 4 online case discussions, each lasting 90-120 minutes, in which several problems are discussed interactively in a live format. You will receive reading material before the start of each session. After each session, an open forum for questions and discussion will be set up for one week and a take-home guide will be provided on our platform. The number of participants is limited to ensure optimal interaction.

These online seminars can be attended by any veterinarian, regardless of their expertise in exotic medicine. We will start with simple cases and end with complex cases.

Overview

Doctor, my pet is not eating: managing gastrointestinal cases in small mammals.

Anorexia is not a very specific symptom, but it is the most common complaint in small mammals. It is therefore very important to perform a rigorous clinical approach including anamnesis, physical examination, differential diagnosis and diagnostics. In this seminar, illustrated by two rabbit, one ferret and one guinea pig case, we will see that many gastroenterology diseases can lead to anorexia.

Learning outcomes

After the seminar, the participant will be able to develop a comprehensive clinical thinking method to explore and treat anorexia in small mammals.

Overview

How to explore and treat hematuria in small mammal?

If using translational knowledge across species is important in veterinary medicine, knowing the anatomic and physiologic specificities of the treated species will allow proper management. In this session, we will see in a rabbit, a guinea pig, a ferret and a hamster that multiple etiologies can lead to hematuria in small mammals and we will speak about common mistakes that could lead to inappropriate diagnosis using only canine translational medicine.

Learning outcomes

After the seminar, the participant will be able to understand how to find the etiology of a hematuria in small mammals.

Overview

Challenges of treating vestibular syndrome in small mammals.

Performing a neurological examination is challenging in a small patient, especially with vestibular syndrome. But rapid diagnosis and treatment is one of the keys to improve and cure this syndrome. With the illustration of four cases (rabbit, ferret, guinea pig and gerbil), we will see that even the smallest species can be treated successfully using the most recent therapies available.

Learning outcomes

After the seminar, the participant will have a detailed knowledge of the different mechanisms that cause vestibular syndrome and will be able to design an adequate diagnostic protocol and treatment for these patients.

Overview

Doctor, my pet is sneezing, is it serious?

Small mammals are unfortunately very good at hiding the severity of their diseases. Often, sneezing is more than just a cold. Through a ferret, a rabbit, a guinea pig and a rat clinical case, the participants will be able to appreciate the diversity of diseases inducing sneezing in small mammals and how to differentiate them in order to implement appropriate treatment.

Learning outcomes

After this seminar, the participants will be able to diagnose and treat small mammals with upper respiratory clinical signs.
