Course Overview

This course has three different parts. The first part of this course focuses on a group of dermatological diseases of enormous importance that do not stop growing: the genodermatoses or diseases of genetic origin. The improvement in molecular tools has allowed the identification of the genetic defect underlying many common hereditary skin diseases, such as ichthyosis, paw pad hyperkeratosis, or acral mutilation syndrome. The clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of the most prevalent genetic skin diseases will be discussed in detail. The second part of the course focuses on the etiopathogenesis, clinical picture, diagnosis, and treatment of the main skin tumours. There is a full day devoted to the cytologic diagnosis of skin nodules and tumours. The third part discusses etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of skin diseases due to behavioural disorders both in the dog and the cat. There are also two lectures specifically devoted to the therapy of psychodermatoses.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Diagnose and manage the most prevalent genodermatoses of dogs and cats. Understand and correctly use genetic tests. Investigate a new genetic disease to identify the cause.
2. Follow a correct diagnostic protocol to diagnose a dog/cat with single/multiple skin nodules.
3. Read and diagnose a cytologic sample obtained from a skin nodule or tumour of an animal.
4. Treat the most prevalent skin neoplasms of dogs and cats.
5. Diagnose and treat the most prevalent skin diseases of dogs and cats caused by behavioural disorders. Adequately prescribe psychotropic drugs.

Main topics:

Skin diseases of genetic origin (genodermatoses). Cause and origin of the genodermatoses. Ichthyoses and hyperkeratotic diseases (paw pad hyperkeratosis). Alopecic genodermatoses. Other genodermatoses. Diagnosis and investigation of a possible genodermatosis.

Cutaneous tumours. Diagnostic approach to skin nodules and tumours. Cytologic diagnosis of skin nodules and tumours. Main skin neoplasms. Principles of surgical oncology applied to the skin and sub-cutaneous tumors.
Cryotherapy. Principles of chemotherapy in skin neoplasms. Specific treatment of most common skin neoplasms of the dog and cat (e.g. melanoma, mast cell tumours, cutaneous lymphomas, histiocytic disorders, …).

Psychogenic and behavioural dermatoses. Canine psychogenic dermatoses (Acral lick dermatitis, tail biting and flank sucking). Feline psychogenic dermatoses (psychogenic alopecia).

Wet lab. Cytologic diagnosis of skin nodules and tumours of dogs and cats.
This wet lab will cover the cytologic diagnosis of skin nodules and tumors, including neoplastic and non-neoplastic processes (inflammatory). The cytology of most common benign / malignant neoplasms of the skin of dogs and cats will be discussed in detail (epithelial, mesenchymal, and round cell).
