Course Overview

This course consists of three differentiated teaching blocks. The first block (two first weeks) focuses on otitis externa and otitis media-interna. The pathophysiology, clinical presentation and subtypes, diagnosis [cytology, video-otoscopy, imaging (CT, MRI)], and management of otitis will be discussed in depth. The second block (third week) is devoted to the discussion of diseases that affect special anatomical regions, such as claws, anal sacs and eyelids and periocular skin. These anatomic regions have a different structure and function than the rest of the skin and present specific problems. The third block (last week) discusses the dermatological diseases of exotic small mammals (ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rats). The main parasitic, infectious, allergic, endocrine, and neoplastic diseases of these species will be discussed.

Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify primary, secondary, and perpetuating causes of a case of otitis externa.
2. Manage cases of otitis externa/media-interna in dogs and cats.
3. Diagnose and adequately treat claw diseases in dogs and cats.
4. Diagnose and adequately treat eyelid and periocuular diseases in dogs and cats.
5. Diagnose and adequately treat anal sac and perianal skin diseases in dogs.
6. Diagnose and adequately treat most common skin diseases of ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs.
