Course Overview

Course IV of the dermatology programme is an eminently clinical course, in which more than 40 different dermatological clinical entities will be reviewed. In the first part, all dermatological diseases of endocrine, metabolic, or nutritional origin will be discussed in depth. From the most common ones, such as hypothyroidism or Cushing’s syndrome to the less frequent ones such as follicular dysplasia. In the second part, skin diseases of environmental origin will be discussed. The last day will be devoted to the discussion of specific dermatological problems in cats, led by an expert in feline medicine.

Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Adequately perform and read endocrine tests.
2. Understand the use of histopathology in the diagnosis of alopecic conditions in dogs and cats.
3. Diagnose and treat systemic diseases with cutaneous impact (endocrine disorders, metabolic and nutritional disorders).
4. Diagnose and treat non-endocrine alopecic diseases of dogs and cats.
5. Diagnose and treat the most common cutaneous diseases of environmental origin.
6. Diagnose and treat the most common cutaneous diseases of cats.

Endocrine diseases. Hypothyroidism, Cushing´s disease, and sex hormone imbalances.
Miscellaneous alopecic diseases. Alopecia X. Follicular dysplasias. Canine recurrent alopecia. Pattern baldness. Sebaceous adenitis. Alopecia areata.
Metabolic, nutritional, and seborrheic skin diseases.
Zn responsive dermatoses. Lethal acrodermatitis of bull terriers. Superficial necrolytic dermatosis – hepatocutaneous syndrome. Seborrheic syndromes. Feline acne. Tail gland hyperplasia.
Environmental skin diseases. Actinic dermatoses. Radiant heat burns. Callus and pressure point pyoderma. Hygroma.
Feline-specific dermatologic diseases. Feline infectious diseases targeting the skin (e.g. FIP, FeLV,..). Eosinophilic granuloma complex. Plasma cell pododermatitis. Idiopathic facial dermatitis.
