Course Overview
This Neurosurgery course is primarily designed for those who participated at the Neurology-Neurosurgery Courses I , II and III. Actually the course will address basic procedures for beginners non experienced in neurosurgery and more advanced selected procedures for veterinarians with a greater surgical experience. The course will focus on neurosurgery with a main emphasis on spinal surgery. The course will be provided in a case-based manner. The necessary theoretical knowledge to understand and to perform high quality neurosurgery will be presented within the case discussion. The course is constructed in an interactive fashion and allows in depth discussions. Practicals are divided in video-based cases presentations and theory and finally a neurosurgical Wetlab.
This video-based course will deal with entire clinical cases, including primary examination (video), further investigations including diagnostic imaging procedures (images), surgery (video), follow up and possible complications (video).
In this manner lecturers expect to illustrate the variety of treatment options for neurosurgical patients in a practical way („real life neurology“).
The wetlab part of the course will give the participants, organized in small groups, the opportunity to develop their neurosurgical skills on cadavers with two main goals:
1. To improve or to develop the own surgical skills by dealing with problems encountered during conventional surgery in practice.
2. To perform basic and more complicated procedures.
The main idea of the course is to allow the participants to solve cases on their own, not only clinically but also diagnostically as well as therapeutically.
