Course Overview

In this first introductory course, the basic principles of nutrition are reviewed.
First, the anatomy and physiology of the digestive tract, digestion and nutrient absorption are reviewed plus the differences between species. Links between the digestive tract and nutrition and other organ systems, and the intestinal microbiome will be shown.
Second, the nutritional consultation in small animal practice , history of the patient, common mistakes, different types of feeding and common myths about production and commercial food .(including a factory visit).The students will learn and practice the evaluation of history and filtering the most important parameters for the patient.
Understanding the food industry and regulations , knowledge of Quality Management, food production , declaration and choosing the right way of feeding and finding the right product for the patient. (healthy pets , different lifestages; special needs like reporducion or sports, important diseases like renal insufficiency, urolithiasis, gastrointestinal and dermatological problems etc.)
Practical exercises and workshops like evaluating the feeding history, Body Condition Scoring, interpretation of labelling etc.will be integrated every day. Case studies from various experts will be presented and evaluated with the students.
Also, basic knowledge of feeding rabbits, rodents, birds and exotic patients will be part of the course.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, participants will:
• have profund knowledge about nutrients and digestion
• be able to approach a nutritional consultation and evaluate a feeding history
• be able to find the right feeding method going hand in hand with the medical treatment and communicate the main points to the pet owner, and be able to find the right product / calculate the needs for the best treatment of the patient
• have profund knowledge about legislation and nutritional science and be able to evaluate food labels critically

– chronic renal insufficiency
– urolithiasis
– and other common problems
• Feeding refresher for rabbits, rodents, birds and exotics
